The first engineering classes were taught at the University of Melbourne in 1861, with only 15 students enrolled. Today the Melbourne School of Engineering is a vibrant community with over 3,000 students enrolled in coursework programs and nearly 25,000 alumni. The school is 'now Australia's leading provider of engineering and IT education and the highest-ranked Australian Institution in engineering and IT across three major international rankings'.
