Janet Clarke Hall was established by Trinity College as their female residences and known as Trinity College Hostel. This was the first college to admit women, and was initially located in four terraces in Royal Parade. In 1890 a new building was begun, this in 1921 was renamed Janet Clarke Hall after Janet, Lady Clark, a significant benefactor.
