The Shire of Mildura, to perpetuate the memory of Merlin Kay Neil Johansen who for forty-one years was Engineer of the Shire, gave to the University the sum of £5,000 and requested that this be invested in such manner as the University in its unfettered discretion may think fit, and that the income be applied to found a scholarship to be known as the 'M.K.N. Johansen Memorial Scholarship for the Advancement of Municipal Engineering'.
