By her will dated 2 December 1930 Jane Ariadne Thomson, late of Melbourne, bequeathed a share of her residuary estate to the University for the purpose of establishing the 'Jane Ariadne McLaurin Thomson and Barclay Thomson Scholarship'. Each scholarship is awarded 'to a person who satisfies the medical research committee of his or her competence to undertake medical research', with preference given 'to a person who proposes to conduct research on, or relating to, the subject of arthritis'. The scholarship was made a University regulation in 1949.
