Emily Scott gave in her lifetime the sum of £2,010, plus an additional bequest of £2,000 by her will, to the University, establishing the 'Ernest Scott Prize' in memory of her husband Emeritus Professor Sir Ernest Scott Knight Bachelor. The prize, in addition to other criteria, is awarded to a person who is the author of a published work that 'is based upon original research in a subject related to the history of Australia or New Zealand or to the history of colonisation' and 'is, in the opinion of the examiners, the most distinguished contribution to the history of Australia or New Zealand or to the history of colonisation published during the period of two calendar years.' The prize was made a University regulation in 1941.
