Summary

James Gossip Melvin and his wife Margaret Drew Melvin, both of 'Stanmere' Sandham Street Elsternwick, Victoria, donated £1,000 in the form of a Commonwealth of Australia Treasury Bond to the University. The donors 'desired that the sum should form the foundation of a scholarship in Engineering to be called the 'John Melvin Memorial Scholarship' in memory of their son John Melvin, B.C.E., who was killed in battle at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.' The scholarship is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Dean of the University's engineering faculty. The scholarship was made a University regulation in 1917.
