By his will dated 9 September 1899, James Stewart, formerly of Ballarat Australia and afterwards of Castlerock in the County of Londonderry Ireland, physician and surgeon, bequeathed two-tenths of his estate to the University for the purpose of establishing 'The Stewart Bequest'. The fund supports the 'Stewart Scholarship' which is to be awarded 'in each of anatomy, medicine and surgery'. The bequest was made a University regulation in 1910.
