Summary

On 24 August 1907, Mrs. Edith Lansell donated the sum of £1,200 to the University for the purpose of establishing 'The George Lansell Scholarship', in memory of her late husband George Lansell of Bendigo. Each scholarship is 'awarded to a student enrolled in a higher degree by research who is undertaking research in a field related to mining in the department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, the department of Geomatics, the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the school of Earth Sciences or any other department of the University that may offer subjects relevant to mining and may be awarded as a travelling scholarship.' The scholarship was made a University regulation in 1908.

Details

On 18 November 2003 the Supreme Court made an Order that -

'The funds comprising the George Lansell Scholarship be applied to provide a scholarship for research in a field relating to mining including, without limitation, mining or mining related subjects taught by the University of Melbourne Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Department of Geomatics, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and School of Earth Sciences or any Department of the University that may in the future offer subjects relevant to mining in addition to or in substitution for the Department referred to above.'
