In 1905, the sum of £627 was presented to the University by members of the Bar of Victoria and presented to the University for the purpose of establishing the 'John Madden Exhibitions'. Of the six exhibitions that may be presented each year, 'one exhibition is to be awarded annually to the student awarded the highest mark in a subject, to be determined from time to time by the dean of Melbourne Law School, in the field of labour law.' In addition, 'one exhibition will be awarded annually to each student participating in the Jessup Moot'. The exhibition fund was made a University regulation in 1906.
