Summary

'A sum of money was subscribed to provide a memorial to the Honourable Sir James MacBain, late President of the Legislative Council in the Colony of Victoria.' 'It was determined by the subscribers that a memorial tablet be erected in Ormond College and that the remainder of the fund be used for the purpose of founding a MacBain research scholarship in Biology having special reference to Australian forms of life.' 'The sum of £750 was donated to the Council of the University for the establishment of the scholarship.' The scholarship fund was made a University regulation in 1898 (University of Melbourne Calendar, 1975).
