Summary

On 27 June 1887 William Charles Kernot, BA, MA, MCE (Melb.), first professor of Engineering in the University, presented the sum of £2000 to the University, and a further £200 in 1908, for the purpose of establishing scholarships in Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and Geology. By his will dated 10 April 2008 Roderick James Esdaile, BSc (Melb.) PhD (Glasgow) bequeathed $10,000 to the University which was added to the capital sum. By her will dated 14 December 2012, the late Susan Angela Esdaile BAppSc (OT) (Usyd) PhD (La Trobe), who was Dr Roderick Esdaile's widow, bequeathed a further $10,000 to the University which was also added to the capital sum. The fund established 'The Professor Kernot Research Scholarships' which are awarded to students in Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences. The scholarship fund was made a University regulation in 1888 (University of Melbourne Calendar, 1975).
