Summary

In 1870 the sum of £1,000 was presented to the University for the purpose of establishing a scholarship 'for the encouragement of Engineering and of the Physical and Natural Sciences'. In 1873 'The Engineering Scholarship' was established, which was later it was renamed 'The Argus Scholarships'. The fund supports the 'The Argus Research Scholarship in Engineering' and 'The Argus Exhibition in Geology'. The scholarship is awarded to Engineering graduates who are undertaking a research higher degree in the Melbourne School of Engineering, and the exhibition is awarded to the student or students with the highest mark in Geology. The scholarship fund was made a University regulation in 1873 (University of Melbourne Calendar, 1975).
