By her will dated 25 June 2011, the late Mrs Merlie (Merl) Ivy Merchant bequeathed a sum of money to the University. On 24 August 2015 the University received a total of $891,912.16 in satisfaction of the bequest. 'An amount of $445,956.08 was used to establish 'The Merlie Ivy Merchant Veterinary Research Bequest', which is to be used 'for the advancement of medical research and veterinary research'. The research bequest was made a University regulation in 2017.
