By his will dated 3 August 2009, the late Donald William Thornton bequeathed $800,000 to the University, establishing 'The Donald William Thornton Bequest Scholarships'. Each scholarship is awarded to a student studying brass or woodwind at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, on the basis of merit as determined by the director of the Conservatorium and on the recommendation of the head of either the brass or woodwind departments. The scholarship was made a University regulation in 2012.
