By his will dated 30 November 2006, the late Russell John Hellyar bequeathed $500,000 to the University, establishing 'The John Hellyar Piano Scholarship Fund'. Each scholarship is awarded to a student who is also an Australian born pianist under 30 years of age and is enrolled at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music within the Faculty of Fine Arts. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of a successful audition. The fund was made a University regulation in 2010.
