In 2004 the University, with the assistance of Sir Peter Derham and Mr Donald Gibb, commenced an appeal for a fund in memory of the late Dr JHW Birrell OAM ISO MB BS (Melb) LLD Honoris Causa (Monash) FRACP FAMA, for the purpose of providing an annual scholarship in the field of traffic safety. The appeal raised $49,362.00, including $40,000 from the Transport Accident Commission, and a donation made by the Birrell family.
