In 2002, the donor, Mr Tjahaja James Lee Riady, BCom Melb. (1978) of Jakarta, Indonesia donated to the University the sum of AUD$ 100,000 to establish scholarships. It was the donor's wish that the scholarships, to be known as the Riady Scholarships, be awarded to postgraduate research students to enable them to undertake fieldwork in Asia.
