The University's Asialink Centre convened a group of eminent Australians as an advisory committee, chaired by Sir Ninian Stephen, to raise funds by way of appeal to establish a perpetual fund to commemorate the late Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop. The appeal was launched by the Prime Minister, Mr Paul Keating, as he delivered the second lecture in the Asialink Lecture Series on 8 December 1993. Asialink is to administer the awards which will include fellowships, a memorial lecture and an annual medal. The University received the sum of $50,000 as a first donation to the appeal.
