Thomas David Benson died on 14th November 1977 after bearing increasing physical handicaps to complete the final year of his course in the University for the degrees of bachelor of Medicine and bachelor of Surgery. Dr. Michael Benson and Dr. Ida Seward (Benson), the father and mother of Tom Benson, each gave the University the sum of $5,000 to establish a fund in his memory. The income of the fund was to be used to assist other physically handicapped students undertaking courses of studies in the University and, if such award should become impracticable, for the improvement of facilities or otherwise in the University for the benefit generally of physically handicapped students.
