A sum of money was subscribed to provide a memorial to Cyril George Hugh McDonald, who died in an air crash near San Francisco on 30 October 1953, and who for many years was the Assistant Chief Electrical Engineer of the Victorian Railways Department. The University received the sum of £1,138 15s. 5d. with a request that the amount be invested and that the income derived therefrom be applied to found a prize to be open to full-time students in the Third Year of the bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree course.
