Summary

By his will dated 18 October 1926, John Smyth, first Professor of Education in the University, bequeathed part of his residuary estate to the University, establishing the 'John and Eric Smyth Travelling Scholarship'. In addition to other criteria, the scholarship is 'aimed at supporting applicants who show potential as a researcher or teacher. 'The scholarship is open to applicants who have completed a teaching degree OR have completed a Masters degree in education at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, and are aged under 30 at the time of application. It offers a stipend as well as travel, accommodation and tuition fees'. The scholarship was made a University regulation in 1945.
