On 20 June 1945, Lady Lyle, Lady (later Dame Mary) Herring, Miss Nancy Lyle, T.R. Lyle Esq. and Mrs Brame donated the sum of 20,000.00 to the University, establishing the 'Sir Thomas Lyle Fellowship in Physics'. The fellowship is awarded 'to distinguished visiting academics in physics' as determined by the head of the school of physics. The fellowship was made a University regulation in 1945.
