By his will Godfrey Howitt, MD, bequeathed his entomological collection and all his books on Entomology and Botany to the University. He also bequeathed £1,000 for the purpose of establishing three scholarships called the 'Howitt Natural History Scholarships'. The scholarships are awarded to students undertaking research studies in botany, genetics, geology or zoology. The scholarship fund was made a University regulation in 1892 (University of Melbourne Calendar, 1980).
