Summary: A consortium of corporate partners proceeded in 1997 with plans to establish a new private university. The concept of Melbourne University Private, which grew out of earlier plans for a single graduate school of energy and the environment, was endorsed by the Academic Board and Council of the University during 1997 (University of Melbourne, Calendar 1998). In 2001 a merger was begun between Melbourne University Private and Melbourne Enterprises International Ltd, which became a subsidiary of Melbourne University Private Ltd. In 2005 Melbourne University Ltd was merged into the academic and business operations of the public university.
