By her will dated 29 January 1951, the late Rachel Esther Alston bequeathed £1,500 to the University for the purpose of establishing the 'Isaac Samuel Crawcour Bursary' in memory of her brother. Isaac Crawcour was a medical student at the University who was murdered by burglars in January 1894. The bursary is awarded to enrolled medical students and takes into account the financial position of the applicant, as determined by a committee responsible for student loans and grants. The bursary was made a University regulation in 1952 (University of Melbourne Calendar, 1980).
